Crew Who Turn Up, Hold Their Tickets and Stay the Season

Finding a deckhand for July is easy; finding one who still has a valid medical, a clean licence and a former captain willing to speak on the phone is not. We recruit for private yachts, charter fleets, sailing schools and small workboats, checking every certificate against the issuing authority and taking references by voice rather than by form. Owners get shortlists of three or four people who genuinely fit the boat. Crew get honest descriptions of the job before they pack.

About us

Run by People Who Did the Seasons First

The agency was founded by a former charter captain and a chief stewardess who between them spent nineteen seasons on boats between forty and ninety feet. Both had been hired through agencies that never saw the vessel, never asked what the rotation actually was, and sent candidates whose certificates had expired two years earlier. They also both had the experience of arriving at a boat that turned out to be nothing like the description. The business exists because both sides of that transaction deserve better.

Every certificate a candidate presents is verified with the issuing authority rather than accepted as a photograph, and every medical, endorsement and licence has its expiry recorded so we know before the client does. References are taken by telephone, from the person who actually supervised the work, and we ask specific questions: how they were in bad weather, how they handled a difficult guest, whether they would be taken back. Written references tell you almost nothing.

We also visit boats. Where a vessel is within reach we go aboard before advertising, because cabin arrangements, watch systems and the owner's actual expectations are what determine whether a placement lasts. For distant vessels we conduct a long structured call with the captain instead. The result is a smaller candidate database than our competitors and a placement retention rate that keeps clients coming back for their whole fleet.

Advantages

Why Captains Call Us Back in March

Six things that separate a working crew agency from a database with a search box.

Certificates Verified at Source

Every licence, endorsement, safety course and seafarer medical is checked against the issuing authority, not accepted as an image in a message. Expiry dates go into our system and we contact candidates before they lapse, so nobody is offered to a client with a document that dies mid-season. A surprising proportion of applicants are quietly holding something expired, and finding out in a port state inspection is expensive for the owner and career-ending for the crew.

References Taken by Voice

We telephone the person who actually supervised the candidate and ask questions a written reference will never answer: how they were on the fourth day of bad weather, whether they told the truth when something broke, how they handled a guest who was difficult, and whether they would be taken back. Tone tells you as much as content. Any candidate who cannot produce a contactable supervisor is presented as exactly that, with the gap stated openly.

We Have Seen the Boat

Where the vessel is reachable we go aboard before writing the advertisement, because the cabin arrangement, the watch system, how many guests actually come and what the owner expects on a day off decide whether a placement survives to September. For distant boats we do a long structured call with the captain covering the same ground. Candidates then receive an honest description, which is why our people rarely leave in week three.

Shortlists of Four, Not Forty

A client receives three or four candidates with a written note on each explaining why they fit this particular boat and what the reservation is, because there is always a reservation. Sending fifty profiles and letting the captain sort them is not recruitment, it is forwarding. Captains are busy in season and the whole value of an agency is that somebody else has already read everything and made the difficult judgements.

Day Work Filled Within Hours

A crew member falls ill the day before a charter and the boat needs a competent replacement by morning. We maintain a live pool of vetted people in each of the main ports who are available at short notice, already verified and already known to us, so an emergency call does not become a gamble on a stranger. That responsiveness is what turns a one-off client into a fleet account.

Paperwork and Contracts Handled

Seafarer employment agreements, flag state requirements, insurance, repatriation clauses and payroll arrangements are unglamorous and easy to get wrong, and mistakes surface at the worst possible moment. We prepare compliant contracts, keep documentation current for the vessel's flag, and explain the terms to both sides in plain language so nobody signs something they have not understood. Owners with several boats can hand the whole administrative side to us.

Services

Positions We Fill

Permanent and rotational crew, seasonal charter teams, day work, shore-based roles, career support and fleet crewing management.

Permanent and Rotational Crew

Captains, mates, engineers, deckhands, chefs, stewardesses and sole crew for privately used yachts, placed on year-round or rotational terms. These searches take time because the fit matters more than the certificate: a family boat with children needs a different person from an owner who races. We interview at length, present a short list with honest reservations, and stay in contact through the first three months to catch problems while they are still small.

Seasonal Charter Teams

Complete crews assembled for a charter season, recruited as a group rather than as individuals because personalities on a small boat matter more than any single résumé. We plan the season from January, verify everybody's documentation before contracts are signed, arrange arrival logistics and hold reserve candidates for each role. Fleets running several vessels get a single point of contact who knows every boat and every rotation date.

Day Work and Emergency Cover

Vetted people available at a few hours' notice for illness, injury, a sudden departure or an unexpectedly busy week — deckhands for a wash-down before guests arrive, a relief engineer for a yard period, an extra stewardess for a turnaround. Everyone in the day pool has been verified and referenced exactly like a permanent candidate, so short notice never means unknown quantity, and hourly rates are agreed in advance.

Workboats, Schools and Commercial Vessels

Crew for sailing schools, dive boats, passenger day boats, survey vessels, pilot launches and small commercial craft, where the certification requirements differ sharply from private yachting and the wrong ticket makes a hire useless. We know which endorsements each role and flag actually demands, and we recruit instructors and skippers who can handle passengers as well as the vessel — a combination that is rarer than it should be.

Career Guidance for Crew

Free advice for people entering the industry or trying to move up: which courses are genuinely required rather than merely sold, how to present sea time, what a realistic first season looks like and which promises in a job description should worry you. We review documentation, rewrite unhelpful résumés and tell people honestly when they are not yet ready for the role they want. Registration for candidates is free and always will be.

Crew Management for Fleets

For owners and management companies running several vessels we take on the whole crewing function: employment agreements, payroll, insurance, certificate expiry tracking, rotation planning, appraisals and the succession of people moving up between boats. It removes an administrative burden that otherwise falls on captains who would rather be running the vessel, and it means a departure in August is covered from within the fleet rather than from a cold search.

Contacts

Vacancies, Registration and Day Work

Owners and captains: tell us the vessel, the programme, the rotation and the start date, and we will say honestly whether the role is findable at that rate before taking it on. Crew: register with your certificates and sea time and we will tell you what is missing.

Day work requests are answered the same day, including at weekends during the season.
